Ken Petersen 1940-2007

I just got home from the memorial service for my friend Ken. Whenever someone dies, everyone says nice things about them, it's just something we do. But in this case, I can't imagine a sweeter, better person than Ken. He enriched my life while he was here, and he inspires me now that he's gone. I'm so sad that he died, but grateful for having known him.

iTunes with Visualizer

See post below

Sharp XG-E1100U Projector

I was given this surplus projector by the school today. It turned my living room into what resembles an Apple Store. First we watched SPLASH movie theater style, then put on iTunes with Visualizer.

Madeline and Me

More pictures from a couple years ago that I found today on my old computer.

Downtown Grand Marais

I found some old pictures today while cleaning off my old computer. I took these a couple of years ago.

First MN Art Car

My first Art Car

OK, maybe this isn't my very first art car, but it was my first one in Minnesota. I did it a couple of years ago for the Fisherman's Picnic Parade in Grand Marais.

Songs For The Road

I'm looking forward to hearing all of David Ford's new album, due out soon. I first heard his song "I Don't Care What You Call Me" from his previous CD, "I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused" on a Paste Magazine CD sampler, and immediately bought his whole CD and the singles associated with it. It's a rare treat for me to find a CD I enjoy so much!

fire

Did you ever stare into a fire late at night, and see images form in the flames and burning wood? Sometimes it happens looking at the clouds. Sometimes that's how it is looking into my paintings. Tonight I was at the neighbors' and they were burning some brush and old wood. A certain nut on a bolt through a burning piece of wood looked like a cross from where we sat on the damp ground.

Squirrels, Chipmunks and Mice, Oh My!

When I was a little kid living in Ferndale, Michigan, I really wanted to catch a squirrel. I set up a box, propped up by a stick with a string on it, and baited it with peanut butter on a popsicle stick. My plan was to wait until a squirrel ate the peanut butter, and then pull the stick out, capturing the animal under a cardboard box. What I thought I'd do next, I dont' know. But it never got that far. So lately, I've been trapping these little critters in my yard here in Northern Minnesota. In the last two weeks, I've caught 8 squirrels, 6 chipmunks, 5 mice and two birds. I drive them a few miles up the shore and release them. I guess this is a childhood dream come true, but now I just don't want them around.

Madeline plays a "D"

Meme and Pepe gave us a guitar for Christmas a couple years ago. Madeline's taken a real interest in it.

Another shot at the Red Mug

It's such a relief to have the paintings down in Superior. I think they look great in that space. The Red Mug has a really cool bohemian feel. I understand the building used to be the Superior City Hall. Anyway, it has partially plastered stone walls, a really cool brick focal point which is the gateway to "the pit." I was there for a couple hours today, and saw a diverse mix of people come in, surf the web, eat, drink coffee, talk, play with toys and just hang out. I like to think of my paintings being a backdrop for that slice of life.

World's Best Donuts, Grand Marais, MN

Everyone keeps talking about these being the final days of summer. That, of course, means only one thing. The Donut Shop will be closing in Grand Marais. For the better part of 20 summers, a certain booth in the Donut Shop has been displaying photos of the Young Family on a vacation out west with their Donut Shop cups. The Badlands, Thermopolis Wyoming, the capital building in Pierre. The donut shop will close on Madeline's birthday this year, and we'll make it through the winter with the help of my new deep fryer.

Birds Of Paradise (and Myrmecophaga tridactyla) 30 x 40

I had originally named this for the Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) that seemed to wander right into the middle of the painting, but then Madeline pointed out the birds.

Words Of The Lagoon 30 x 40"

I loved hearing what Madeline had to say about this. Her take was quite different than mine, but one of the things I love about art is that there's no one right answer. When I was in school, I had a hard time with math, because everyone had to come up with the same answer, and had to come by it in the same way. It seems like I usually come up with a different answer than everyone else. Always have.

Comfort 30 x 40"

Yeah, I made a few changes to this painting. Nobody liked it the way it was. Now I don't care what anyone thinks, because I like it. :-)

Five Fish (24 x 36") at Coho

All of the 9 paintings at Coho have a fish theme. This one hangs in the entryway.

Anne at Coho

This is my friend Anne sitting under "Crocodile Lagoon," 24x36.

New Show at Coho Cafe

I hung my new exhibit at Coho tonight, along with my friend Anne. I'm pictured here with "A Fish (A Moving Light)" and "Yukon Reds." I'm pretty excited about how the paintings look in the restaurant. I'd been so engrossed in painting that I'd begun to lose perspective as today approached. But I'm happy now and Anne described them as "spectacular," which means a lot to me coming from her.
